Mandav: The Ancient City of Joy

Mandav (historically known as Mandu or Mandavgad) is a mesmerizing ancient fortress city perched at an altitude of 2,000 feet on the Vindhya Range in Madhya Pradesh. Celebrated as an architectural marvel, this historic town originally served as a vital military outpost before ascending to grand glory as the capital of the Malwa Sultanate during the 14th and 15th centuries. It is enclosed by a massive 37 km battlement wall featuring 12 historic gateways (darwazas).

Mandav is globally renowned for its unique blend of elegant Afghan and Indo-Islamic architecture, featuring legendary structures like the Jahaz Mahal (Ship Palace), which is built between two artificial lakes to resemble a floating ship, and the sloping-walled Hindola Mahal (Swing Palace). The town also serves as a poignant monument to the legendary, tragic love story of Sultan Baz Bahadur and his consort Rani Roopmati, immortalized in the high-perched Roopmati's Pavilion overlooking the sacred Narmada River. From Hoshang Shah's Tomb—India's very first white marble monument, which directly inspired the design of the Taj Mahal—to the grand arches of the Jami Masjid, Mandav offers a deeply romanticized step back into central India's glorious medieval history.
